  • About COCU - Uganda

The Chazon Opportunities Centre Uganda (COCU-Uganda) is a not-for-profit organization founded and registered in 2024, with its headquarters in Bugiri and operations across all 11 districts of Busoga. COCU-Uganda is committed to fostering sustainable development, improving livelihoods, and empowering communities in the region.

Inspired by the work of economist and philosopher Amartya Sen, we believe in the importance of expanding human capabilities and providing individuals with the opportunities to lead lives they value. This philosophy guides our approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by Busoga, including poverty, limited access to quality education, poor healthcare, environmental degradation, and human rights and gender inequality.

Our focus areas include improving livelihoods, promoting sustainable natural resource management, enhancing education, supporting youth employment, and advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. By empowering communities and individuals, we work towards breaking the cycle of poverty and creating lasting, positive change.

Rooted in the local culture and values of Busoga, COCU-Uganda collaborates closely with communities, local governments, and stakeholders to develop sustainable, culturally relevant solutions. We are dedicated to building capacity and supporting long-term development for a brighter future.

Our vision is a future where every person in Busoga has the opportunity to thrive. Through community-driven solutions and a commitment to human development, COCU-Uganda is transforming the region and improving the quality of life for all.

    What we are doing

Sustainable Livelihoods, Agriculture & Natural Resource Management.

We enhance rural livelihoods by promoting sustainable farming practices, agroecology, and natural resource management. Our programs improve food security, boost income, and protect the environment through community-led initiatives.

    Youth Employment & Skills Development.

We empower youth with vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and job placement services to improve employment opportunities. Through partnerships with local businesses, we help young people gain the skills needed for a successful future.

    Education

We support children’s education by partnering with schools to create safe, thriving environments. Our programs provide counseling and guidance, access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and food for students. We also advocate for gender equality and support women and girls in overcoming barriers to education.

    Gender & Human Rights

Gender and human rights are a cross-cutting issue in all our programs. We advocate for gender equality and the protection of human rights, with a focus on empowering women and girls. Our efforts include raising awareness about gender-based violence, supporting victims with counseling and legal aid, and eliminating barriers to education and participation for marginalized groups.

    Our Founder

    Solomon Mbubi

    Founder

COCU-Uganda was founded by Solomon Mbubi, a visionary leader deeply committed to sustainable development and social justice. Born and raised in the Busoga region, Solomon has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by communities in the area, from poverty and limited access to education to environmental degradation and gender inequality. Motivated by a deep sense of responsibility to his people, Solomon established COCU-Uganda in 2024 with the aim of transforming lives and creating a prosperous future for all.

Solomon is an expert in development projects, with years of experience working on initiatives that drive positive change in rural communities. His expertise spans community development, poverty reduction, and sustainable resource management. Over the years, Solomon has honed his skills in designing, implementing, and overseeing development programs that are both effective and sustainable. His deep understanding of the challenges facing Busoga enables him to create tailored solutions that have a real, lasting impact.

Solomon’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that sustainable development and community empowerment are key to overcoming the region's challenges. Inspired by the teachings of economist Amartya Sen, Solomon emphasizes the importance of expanding individual capabilities and providing equal opportunities for all. His vision for COCU-Uganda is one where every person in Busoga has the chance to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Through his leadership, COCU-Uganda is driven by the values of sustainability, empowerment, and inclusivity, ensuring that the organization's programs address the root causes of poverty and inequality in a holistic way. Solomon’s commitment to creating lasting change is reflected in COCU-Uganda’s focus on education, youth empowerment, gender equality, and environmental sustainability – all critical components of his vision for a better, more equitable Busoga region.
